Not being able to govern events, I govern myself, and if they will not adapt to me, I adapt to them.
Adapt the world to you first. If that doesn't work, adapt to the world.
Right now, in the midst of the pandemic, there are significant parts of the world that will not adapt to us.
What do we do in the face of apparent powerlessness and uncertainty? The same thing we've done before. The Stoic response is similar to the Alan Perlis' line:
Dealing with failure is easy: Work hard to improve. Success is also easy to handle: You've solved the wrong problem. Work hard to improve.
What do we do? See the world as it is, utilize sound judgement and reason. Focus on the good and the virtuous. Be a model friend, parent, and citizen. The same as before.
Conviction in a life philosophy enables us to quickly respond to life's curveballs. Curveballs will offer up new opportunities and challenges, but the shape of the answers are always the same.
Adapt yourself to the circumstances you have drawn; and the men among whom your lot has fallen, love them, and truly.
